How to Choose a Dog Chew: 8 Things to Check Before You Buy

Not every chew suits every dog. Here are eight things to check before you buy. This is general information, not veterinary advice, so ask your vet if your dog has health concerns.

1. Read the ingredient list

A short list you recognise makes it easier to know what your dog is eating. Look out for anything your dog is allergic or sensitive to.

2. Think about allergies

If your dog has a known food allergy, check every ingredient. For example, chicken-based chews aren't suitable for dogs with a chicken allergy.

3. Match the chew to your dog's size

A chew that's too small can be swallowed whole, and one that's too big may be hard to manage. Follow the size guidance for your dog's weight.

4. Think about how your dog chews

Slow chewers and gulpers need different chews. If your dog tends to swallow treats without chewing, talk to your vet before offering one.

5. Check the hardness

Very hard chews can be tough on teeth. Some vets suggest pressing a thumbnail into a chew: if it leaves no mark at all, it may be too hard for some dogs. Ask your own vet what suits your dog.

6. Look at the label

A pet treat label should show the ingredients, a guaranteed analysis, the net weight, and the name and address of the company. If a seller can't tell you who makes the product, that's worth asking about.

7. Count the treat in your dog's calories

Treats should make up no more than about 10% of your dog's daily calories. Chews can add up, so adjust meals if your dog gets them regularly.

8. Supervise, store and ask your vet

Stay with your dog while they chew, store the product as directed, and check with your vet if your dog has digestive, dental or swallowing problems.

Where Wufzy fits

Wufzy chews are made from one ingredient, chicken feet, slow-dried with the nails removed by hand. They aren't suitable for dogs with a chicken allergy. See the product page for the feeding guide and safety notes.
