How to Store Dog Treats and Chews Safely

Good storage keeps chews fresh and helps you spot anything that has gone wrong. It's general advice. Always follow the directions on the package for any product you buy.

Basic storage rules

  • Keep it sealed. Reseal the bag after each use, or move the chews to an airtight container.
  • Keep it cool and dry. Store away from heat, steam and damp areas, such as next to the stove or a sink.
  • Avoid direct sunlight. Light and warmth can affect dried products.
  • Keep it out of reach. Store where pets and small children can't get into it.

Check before you serve

Look at, smell and feel each chew. Don't give it to your dog if it looks, smells or feels off. Signs to look for include mold, a sour or unusual smell, sticky or soft spots on a dry product, or anything that looks different from the rest of the bag.

Good habits

  • Keep the original bag or note the batch details, in case you need to contact the seller.
  • Don't mix old and new chews in one container.
  • Wash your hands after handling, and wash any container that has held treats.
  • Don't give your dog chews from a damaged bag. Contact the seller first.
