How Long Do Dried Chicken Feet Last? Freshness and Chew Time
"How long do they last?" can mean two things: how long a bag stays fresh, and how long your dog spends chewing one. Here is both. This is general advice, so always follow the directions and the best-by date on the package you buy.
How long a bag stays fresh
- Check the best-by date or batch information on the package. If a seller doesn't give one, ask.
- Keep the bag sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Reseal the bag after each use, or move the chews to an airtight container.
- Don't store chews near heat or damp, such as next to a stove or sink.
Signs a chew has gone off
Don't give a chew to your dog if it looks, smells or feels off. Look for mold, a sour or unusual smell, or sticky or soft spots on a product that should be dry. If you're unsure, throw it away and contact the seller.
How long a chew keeps your dog busy
It depends on your dog's size, age and chewing style. Some dogs work through a chew slowly, while others finish it quickly. Start with one and see how your dog does. Don't give more just to make it last longer.
Make chewing safer
- Stay with your dog while they chew.
- Take the chew away when it's small enough to swallow whole.
- Keep treats to about 10% or less of daily calories.
