How to Introduce New Treats to Your Dog Safely
A new treat can upset a dog's stomach if you add it too fast. A slow start helps you spot problems early. This is general information, not veterinary advice.
Step by step
- Check first. Read the ingredients and make sure nothing matches your dog's allergies. Ask your vet if your dog has health conditions or is a puppy.
- Add one new thing at a time. Don't start a new food and a new treat in the same week.
- Start with a small portion. Offer less than you think you need.
- Wait and watch. Over the next day or two, look for loose stools, vomiting, itching, or low energy.
- Increase slowly. If your dog does well, offer a normal portion on another day.
Make notes
A quick note of what your dog ate and when makes it easier to spot the cause of any problem, and helps your vet.
When to stop
- Vomiting or diarrhea that continues
- Itching, redness or ear problems that start after a new treat
- Choking, gagging or distress. Contact your vet or an emergency clinic right away.
Keep the total small
Treats of all kinds should be about 10% or less of your dog's daily calories.
